So, this isn’t strictly an outing but why not plan a full day of beach exploration? Children love playing in the sand, having picnics and exploring the length of Surfside. They can discover “treasures”, create sand sculptures, build dams or forts or swim and splash in the water. It’s amazing how many adults tell us that days on the beach bring back fond memories of their own childhoods. Your children can create their own magical memories at Surfside!
Crabbing enthralls young children and is lots of fun for adults. It is such an easy and cheap way to entertain different generations of the family. All you need is some simple tackle and bait, which you can easily buy in one of the bait shops near Surfside Pier. Stick your bait onto your line and dangle it into the water. You’ll soon find yourself pulling up hungry crabs. You can either pop them straight back into the ocean or watch them scrambling about in your bucket. The Pier is a popular spot for crabbing and it’s ideal for any older family members who prefer the comfort of a fishing chair while the kids crouch or kneel on the boards.
From Surfside you get full access to fourteen fabulous miles of freely accessible shorelines. It’s a perfect spot for sport fishing whether you want to fish directly from the beach right in front of your house or head down to the Pier. The Pier is a mile long and it’s free to fish from here. Some people like to book a charter. Guests usually find their own favorites among the charter companies and you can check fishing charter reviews on Yelp before you book. Depending on the time of year, you can catch an amazing variety of species so check out the Fishing Booker website to find out when your preferred fish is in season!
Bird lovers have plenty to discover during a stay in Surfside. The Audubon Society says this is one of their favorite birding site locations. Just take a look on your online map to find how many sanctuaries and observatories are within a walk or quick drive of your beach house. The Southern Brazoria Refuge has ranked #1 in the North American Christmas Count four times in the last 20 years. During this time over 326 species have been sighted. Another popular destination for birders is the Quintana Neotropical Bird Sanctuary which has hidden viewing spots and an observation tower.
Surfside has several pods of dolphins that can often be seen frolicking in the surf. Keep your eyes open while you’re on the beach and you will often see them about 50 to 60 yards offshore. This might be a bit too far out for younger children to enjoy but you can always take in a trip to Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson.
This project has benefitted from a large investment so you can enjoy an impressive Visitor Center. Spend a day exploring the 5,000-gallon artificial reef, 2,200 gallon Coastal Bay aquarium and 1,000-gallon salt marsh exhibit. There is plenty for everyone to enjoy during your visit.
